This past weekend, Grove Park in London transformed into a hub of community health and awareness for the launch of Know Your Numbers Week 2026. With community spirit in full swing across the park's festival grounds, the event brought vital health screenings directly to the public, emphasizing the silent importance of monitoring cardiovascular health.

The blood pressure awareness campaign in Lewisham was officially launched with the support of Rt Hon Janet Daby, Member of Parliament for Lewisham East. Taking a proactive stance, Janet Daby not only advocated for the cause but also sat down to get her own blood pressure checked, leading by community example.

She was joined by Joan, a dedicated 'Let’s Talk Blood Pressure' champion easily recognizable in her blue high-visibility jacket. Speaking to the attendees in a video recorded at the event, Janet Daby highlighted exactly why this local initiative is so crucial for everyone:

"It’s really important to know your numbers, which means it’s really important to know what your blood pressure is. It’s all about keeping us safe and keeping us healthy. If you have a high blood pressure, then it means you need to do something to significantly change your habits and your lifestyle. These wonderful people are out here making sure that we have the opportunity to know our numbers."

A Quick, Painless, and Vital Check

The event, supported by organizations including the Africa Advocacy Foundation, featured a vibrant atmosphere complete with local community stalls and a dog show. However, the core message at the blue health tents remained sharply focused on preventative care.

Free community blood pressure screenings provided a quick and easy way for locals to assess their health risks.

Local council leadership also stepped up to support the initiative. Speaking alongside Joan, they emphasized that high blood pressure can affect anyone, regardless of age. The message to the community, especially young people, was clear: checking your blood pressure is quick, painless, and highly accessible. With modern lifestyle factors such as high-salt diets, smoking, and alcohol consumption increasing risks, early detection is key to preventing long-term health issues before they escalate.

Why You Should Know Your Numbers: Blood Pressure Awareness

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, earning it the nickname of a "silent killer." The only way to know if you are at risk is to get a simple check. If your numbers are high, the condition can often be managed effectively through everyday lifestyle changes—such as improving your diet, exercising regularly, and reducing stress—or through prescribed medication.

A huge thank you to Joan, the dedicated healthcare volunteers, and Rt Hon Janet Daby for championing this cause in Lewisham East. Keep the momentum going this week: find your nearest screening event, take a few minutes out of your day, and know your numbers.
